Haven't gone through with professional installation yet, but so far we've tested it out and it's met all of our expectations. However, the packaging and condition of the product surpassed all my expectations. Was packed in 3 boxes! All of which were in great condition. I had just bought some Polk Audio RTI-10's, and they came in soaked and destroyed boxes, therefore i was quite scared of how this one would come like, but was presently surprised!

I use this projector in basement, and the brightness and colors are stunning. 3D movies looks great. The only feature I would like to have from the 'big brother' AE-PT8000 model is the lens memory in 3D.

Works excellent. Have on a 120" screen in a Home Theatre room. Very Happy so far. Easy to set up. Has an ECO mode that makes bulb life better and cuts down on fan noise. Great value!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great 2D But 3D Needs Improvement, December 17, 2012

This review is from: Panasonic PT-AE7000U 3D LCD Projector - 1080p - HDTV - 16:9 (PTAE7000U) - (Electronics)
I've been using this projector since February with a 120" screen. The 2D performance is great. I bought this projector because of its high contrast ratio, which makes it easy to distinguish details during dark scenes. I generally watch movies in total darkness, but 2D images look fantastic even when I watch something during the day and there's a bit of ambient light creeping into the room. As others have pointed out, the fan is very quiet in Eco mode, which extends the life of the bulb from 4,000 hours to 5,000 hours. In Normal mode, it's a bit louder but not bothersome. I was surprised at how little the difference is between Eco and Normal modes; I was expecting a big drop in brightness, but the difference is marginal. I especially like the tool called Detail Clarity, which lets you sharpen little details like facial lines and clothing textures from +1 to +7 without over sharpening the entire image. And being able to save lens settings and picture modes comes in handy too.

Unfortunately, the 3D performance is disappointing. Yes, the depth and pop-out effects can be amazing (depending on the movie, of course), but the dimmer picture created by the glasses takes a lot of getting used to. Sure, you can turn up the brightness, but that results in a washed out picture. And yes, you can turn up the colors and contrast, but that results in hot spots and oversaturated colors. The last thing you can to do to brighten the 3D image is to set the glasses to Light mode. I'm not sure what that tells them to do, but the result is a brighter image. That would be a good thing except brightening the picture reveals more dreaded crosstalk (ghosting). Yes, there's plenty of crosstalk. I'm using the 3rd generation of Panasonic glasses, and it doesn't matter if the glasses are set to Light, Normal or Dark: crosstalk can be found if you look for it. (Setting them to Dark or Normal makes it a bit harder to spot but doesn't eliminate it altogether.) I'm not saying there's crosstalk in every second of every 3D movie I've seen; I'm saying it rears its ugly head from time to time, so when others say there isn't any crosstalk at all I can only believe we haven't watched the same films, or the image they're watching is set darker than mine, or they just haven't looked hard enough for it.

It's very evident in "Despicable Me." The most glaring example of it is when the ticket floats past Gru in space and pops out of the screen. There's a ghostly image of it to the left and right of the ticket itself. There's also crosstalk evident moments before this when Gru shrinks the moon. This projector allows the user to adjust the parallax in an effort to eliminate crosstalk, but I've found that all this does is move the crosstalk to another part of the image: eliminating crosstalk associated with objects in the foreground simply creates crosstalk in the background. It may not happen within the same scene, but sooner or later I notice crosstalk in a background object if I've corrected it in a foreground object. Bottom line: this feature is useless. If the parallax isn't correct to begin with, no amount of tinkering with it corrects it for the whole film. For the longest time, I thought "Avatar" was free of crosstalk. Recently, however, I scrutinized a few scenes and discovered I was wrong: I found ghosting next to some of the monitors in the scene where Jake connects with his avatar for the first time.

Most of the time I try not to look for crosstalk because it ruins my enjoyment of the film, but every now and then it's just too obvious to ignore. Prior to owning this projector, I had a 73" Mitsubishi DLP 3D TV. I never once saw crosstalk on it, and from what I've read that's because DLP's generally have little to no crosstalk at all. LCD technology, on the other hand, is prone to crosstalk. I don't know why that is, but my next projector most likely won't use LCD technology. Panasonic improved upon this projector with this year's offering, but I for one am skeptical of LCD projectors now.

One final note: the 2D to 3D conversion feature is another waste, so don't let that affect your buying decision. Prior to purchasing this projector, I read a professional review that gave it high marks for its conversion feature. Even though there are 5 conversion settings to choose from, none of them create a convincing 3D image within the movie itself. In fact, whenever I've tried this feature, the only 3D effect I've seen is when I bring up the projector's menu: the menu appears to be closer to me than the movie behind it. Big deal. Close the menu and any 3D effect that was present disappears.

I love this projector! Easy to set up, picture looks amazing, especially when viewing a Blu-ray disc, and quiet in operation. All my home cinema needs now is a popcorn machine and then I'm never going out again!

I had a 2D 720p Samsung home cinema projector for the past 5 years. I finally decided to upgrade due to the 3D capability and higher resolution and the low price. Yes, this was going for around $3000 when it first came out, but I picked up a "used" projector from Amazon Warehouse Deals for $2300. As far as the used condition goes, I was somewhat puzzled as I seemed to received a brand new projector, with all the shipping preparations (styrofoam insets, etc.) intact. The bulb apparently had 0 hours on it as well (yes I know it can be reset), so I would say in my case, used seems to be the way to go.

As for performance, its perfect. I'm using with HTPC, and there is a short delay of 2 seconds or so when transitioning to 3D mode, but image quality is phenomenal compared to my previous projector and much much brighter. Quite simply, I can't imagine ever needing anything more in a projector than what this has to offer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome for PS3 games, May 14, 2012

This purchase was the end result of weeks and weeks of investigation and product comparison, and man am I happy with my decision! My goal was to find a high quality 1080p projector that looked snappy, needed minimal setup, was reasonably quiet, and was good for playing PS3 games as well as movies and HD TV. This projector meets and exceeds all of my requirements.

The setup is easy and really doesn't need any tweaking once running. I used the analog stick on the projector unit to adjust the screen location (which is admittedly a little finicky) on the wall, zoomed it to the size I wanted, set to ECO mode, and was watching boner-inducing video in about 5 minutes. Mounting on a ceiling takes a little longer and depends on the mount you buy (just make sure it's compatible with this unit).

The 2D picture on this projector is absolutely stunning, even right out the box. In fact, I have yet to tweak the settings since installing it and none of the eleven people who have seen it in action so far in my theater have felt that it needed any adjustment. Movies, HD Directv, and PS3 games look incredible on a 120" screen at 12 feet with no blurring or pixelation. I can't comment on the 3D functionality as I haven't used it yet, but probably will when glasses become cheaper.

The cooling fan is pretty quiet in Normal mode and is nearly inaudible if the projector is placed in ECO mode. This energy saving mode is less bright and taxes the bulb less, but produces a great picture as long as your theater room is fully light controlled and can be pitch black. Not a lot of heat is produced by the unit in either mode and I'm hoping that the bulb will last for 4-5 years. We'll see.

For those who play video games a lot, rest assured that this projector will not only provide a crisp colorful picture, but does so without any motion blurring, stuttering, or input lag. There are a lot of projectors out there that are not good for games, but the PT-AE7000 has no trouble. I don't have an XBox360, but I'm sure the experience wouldn't be much different.

I love this thing since I first unpackaged it 2 months ago and use it for at least two hours everyday. The black casing looks really sharp and professional in full light and blends in almost imperceptibly against my deep black ceiling (in fact, people usually don't see the unit until I point it out). On that note, if you plan on mounting this unit to the ceiling, make sure it's a good quality mount that will easily support the weight of the projector, as it would suck to find nearly $3000 worth of visual beauty in a broken pile on your floor as a result of cheap mount support.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
