Compared to my previous old 2004 NEC LT-260K projector, which was quite good in my dedicated HT room - wow, big improvement!!
I recommend ProjectorCentral.com to compare, and the Panasonic PT-AE8000U was very highly rated!
I've only had the new projector installed for a couple weeks, but here's the differences I've experienced so far:
- Improved 1920x1080 Resolution (Now can even sit on the floor in front of the big 122in screen and it's still quite clear!)
- Much greater Contrast Ratio! (500,000:1) Night Scenes are much clearer, and gives more depth of field.
- Brighter (Can even use room lighting now if desired with very little screen washout!)
- Quieter Fan (better during silent passages...)
- Longer Lamp Life (2000-3000 previously, and now 4000hrs, 5000 in eco)
- More refinement / adjustability controls options
- 3D capability that didn't have before... (Can be immersed in the movie if you choose on occasion... Wow! Amazing!)
- 2D to 3D Conversion option
- Power Zoom & Power Focus, as well as other setup improvements
- Better Color Interpretation
- Very fast 480Hz Dual Core Processor greatly improves fast motion scene tracking in real-time without eye fatigue.
- Split-Screen helps setup changes to see present and proposed change comparison...
- The picture quality is so amazing, you completely forget that you're actually watching a projector!?!
Extremely impressive projector!! Yes, this likely is the best HT projector from Panasonic so far!!!
Thanks Panasonic!! Mike (Puget Sound Area, WA)

I replaced an 11 year old 720p projector that was working very well. The picture is excellent and the screen brightness is very good. Why not 5 stars? The ceiling mounting hardware is tremendously overpriced. Using a third party mount is not simple. When aiming at an upper end system, the manufacturer needs to make sure that they finish the total system well. I do like the menu system and the electronic setup went smoothly. The 3D is not the reason to buy this projector and does not do justice to the performance of the 2D performance. In fact, when we have our movie night, my family asks that we not have to watch the movies in 3D.

4.0 out of 5 stars My first projector, January 24, 2013

Seems to work fine so far. I only have about 50 hrs. on it, so don't know about bulb life, etc. Excellent picture in full size mode. Unfortunately, I bought a 100 inch screen, so had to use the reduced size mode, as 100 inches seems to be the break point. The down-side is that I get light spill off the screen edges. Not too objectionable, but a 106 inch screen would have solved the matter.

I love the projector, never-mind the 3D, it is not a subtle upgrade from the PT-AE4000. In terms of picture quality, everything is better - brightness, contrast, and clarity. It is actually bright enough that in a reasonably light controlled setting, you could run in ECO mode and be perfectly happy. Again, going from PT-AE4000 to the 8000 is well worth it. 3D seemed fine, just make sure that you purchase the correct 3D glasses as there are different versions, even within Panasonic.

Now the bad part - I like everyone else, try to save a buck when I can. I didn't realize that Amazon allowed grey-market, marketplace dealers; but in retrospect, I guess that was my own naivety. BIG VALUE, Inc. IS NOT AUTHORIZED TO SELL Panasonic. They claim that they are just like buying from your retail store, but I have never had a retail store that was grey-market. Your rebates and warranties WILL NOT be honored by Panasonic. Unfortunately the way I found this out was by trying to redeem a rebate. By the time I received a denial from Panasonic and clarification from BIG VALUE, Inc, I was outside of the 30 day return window.

I will go though the claim process and hopefully Amazon will support my side based on BIG VALUE's deceptive marketing, but it's an expensive lesson to learn; as regardless as to whether I am able to return the projector; I also lost out on the two free pairs of 3D glasses and the $100 rebate check.

Mounted this projector last week and have finally gotten around to fine tune originaly I watched a dvd picture, it was pretty good so I was a little let down at image quaility today I downloaded a full HD movie , what a picture I am projecting on a 125" painted screen Sherwin williams pro classic satin extra white let me just say why would anybody spend $1,000-$3,000 for a screen I can assure you picture is flawless and colors are exact. after watching HD and blu-ray I am giving this a strong 9.5 I am sure in 3d the $3,000 screen might be better but I will let you know when the Glasses come.update Panasonic is not giving rebate due to purchase through non autherized reseller good news for me panasonic has ticked me off so bad I have boxed up the old 8000u and they can have it back I haved move to the Epson 6020 so it cost $200.00 more, the 2d picture is even better than the Panasonic never had a chance to test the Panasonic for 3d,Epson performs perfect.ohh and the bonus the Epson came with 2 pair of 3d glasses, Extra bulb, and mount 3 year warranty which is the best in the industry I could only imagine if I had a problem with the panasonic because Panasonic is only there for the sale not the service.Dont by Panasonic

This is a fabulous projector. But please be aware that Panasonic will NOT honor the extended warranty with two free sets of glasses if purchased through Amazon. Still, it is terrific image, lots of adaptability and terrific center for any home theatre installation.

3.0 out of 5 stars From PT-4000 to this new model, December 10, 2012

This review is from: Panasonic PTAE8000U 1080p Full HD Projector (Electronics)
I owned PT-AE4000U and now I bought PT-AE8000U and I am yet to see a big difference. It does shows 3D - I saw Madagascar 3 which was fun, Avengers and Avatar in 3D(I really like these movies but these movies were average watching experience in 3D). Considering all the great reviews around 8000 model I was considering drastic difference in comparison to my 2 year old 4000 unit with 1300 hours on a bulb. Now I am trying to convince myself that it has a much better picture in 2D and somehow the picture seems blurry to me. The lens focus, colors, etc... are all fine. I went through the same tuning and setup as with PT4000 using two different blue ray video tuning discs. Maybe my unit is faulty but I cannot see anything obvious except 4000 was aligned perfectly with my 1200 inch screen whenever 8000 is somehow not aligned with the screen geometry. Based on over $2000 of extra investement I am so far dissatisfied with the experience but planning to run the units side by side to do a more fair comparison when I get a chance.
