I got this for my church and it has worked out very well for a number of programs. Everyone likes it. Easy to use and very portable.

When I decided to buy a projector, I was gonna do my research. Finally, I went with the Epson 85HD, partially due to the reviews on this site. I guess that's why I feel obligated to write a review of this, to help people make a decision that I worked on for a long time.

Short review, the 85hd is a great product. But I'll break down the pros and cons based on what I've experienced.

Pros --
1. The remote. I thought I'd have to at least point it in the direction of the projector, but that's not the case. If it's in the same room, it doesn't matter where you point it, it will work. Awesome, right?
2. Brightness. One thing that I was worried about the transition to a projector was picture quality in a bright room. No need to worry, my hanging light fixture can be on and the projector will fire through my fully lit living room. Does the picture fade a bit? Obviously. But is enough to ruin the viewing? No way.
3. Picture quality. In the dark, just projected on my poorly painted wall, the picture of HD signals is just as good as my 37" 720p TV ever was. I have even stretched the picture to the largest recommended, approximately 110"-120", and HD signals are outstanding!
4. Noise. It's quiet. If the quiet hum of a projector bothers you, I guess you're just really picky. Honestly I kind of like it, it makes for even more of a movie atmosphere.
5. Portability. I can carry this with one hand in the carry case it comes with. Can you say the same for a 80" TV?
6. Hookups. This projector comes with an optical out, for easy connection to a home theater. This is surprisingly rare for projectors, and just another of the little things that make this projector awesome.

Cons -- or I guess con...
1. Low definition signals. I knew this going in but I didn't mind because 99% of my use of it would be HD signals. But for the sake of full coverage I should tell you, non -HD cable and old game systems are going to suffer. If you're planning to do alot of non -HD this probably is not the projector for you.

Love this projector, and I don't regret the purchase one bit.

We have enjoyed our projector for several months now. We watch YouTube as well as dvds. Works great and is easy to operate. Our wall is about ten feet wide and the picture is good. A screen would make it brighter, but we love it as is.

I did my homework on these purchases reading about low cost projectors with high cost replacement bulbs bulb hours, the differences in all the different types of bulbs, lumens, and so on, and also read reviews about an outdor theater purchase being like a boat - in the beginning you will love it, but after the first few times of dragging out a DVD player, speakers, your screen, etc it would be too much work so I invested in this Epson MovieMate and my husband and I just love it. In the beginning I hooked it up to my IPAD with a cable but then I figured out a little tiny Roku box was much smaller and thus, easier to handle outside in the dark and WOW!.... just 2 minutes to watch a movie on Netflix, Hulu, your games or anything and the resolution is fabulous on the side of our house - did not need a screen at all so that was a plus. Also, the first DVD I put in was How the Grinch stole Christmas and the sound on a DIsney movie is just incredible - no need for speakers at all so again having one item to just plug and play made us thrilled to have done our homework and found this magnificent player - I could do a commercial for this product - I live lakefront and the neighbors from across the lake even wondered what was going on. I put the big games on the screen outdoors too and again ....what a plus! With my cable networks IPAD application downloaded I can watch all my TV programs outside too.... again... we just love it!

Excellent fun family nights with built in DVD. Also very easy to run HDMI cable from house to projector outside and have HUGE TV for watching sports. Really happy with it, great picture, easy to use, very portable. Get one.

I purchased my Epson Movie Mate 85 projector from Amazon (shipped overnight) when my other Epson 62 failed (while still under the 2 yr. warranty). Had I known how ridiculous it would be to work on repair through Epson, I would not have purchased. I called yesterday to find out where and how to get repairs. Started out seeking information, by the time I got off the phone I was angry and frustrated. I own 4 projectors and six laptops, not new to tech problems. I am new to the bad attitude exhibited yesterday. I will go back to Dell or In-focus. Amazon did great! Epson service was terrible. Still not resolved....

I bought this unit because it appeared to be very versatile. We like to do a lot of camping and outside stuff. We wanted a projector to not only show movies on a portable screen at night, but one that we could temperarily place in a stationary area on the patio for sporting events and movies, sort of like a substitute for an outside flatscreen. It worked for almost everything we wanted. The speakers were adequate for a small space/audience (especially kids). The dvd player worked great. Even with just 720p, the picture was great. It also had a fairly small throw distance. Kids loved it, wife loved it... I did not love the fact it did not have a rear projection mode.

I looked at a ton of review sites and personal reviews, but never saw a negative review about rear projection. After looking over every menu option many times, it appears that you can mount from the ceiling, but not rear project it. Since our patio has an acrylic screen with rear projection film on it to allow viewing from both sides, I wanted the flexibility to rear project or front project. This unit only front projects and makes it extremely tough to watch sporting events from the rear projection side (everything is inverted). After much consternation, I sent it back and have ordered the Epson HD710 that can handle rear projection. I am bummed that I am giving up a dvd player and 10 watt speakers (710 is only 2 watt). I really liked the machine other than the front only mode.

The Projector is a great product, easy to set up with great clarity and sound for interior rooms and even outdoors. Would wish that it would be capable of using 220v power since that is all I have overseas so I have a converter. None the less it is a great purchase and a great product.
