I bought my projecter (BenQ W6000) from Amazon in September of 2010. It worked fine the first year but before the warranty was up, I had to send it back into the manufacturer to fix the Dynamic Black feature. The image was very dark and was only usable if I turned the Dynamic Black feature off.

About 1 year later (September 2012), it started again. Since it wasn't under manufacturer warranty, I turned the feature off.

Now (February 2013), I'm lucky if an image appears when I turn it on. I replaced the lamp but even then, I had the same problem. You can see it turns on and the lamp is on but no image is displayed. If you turn it off and then on again, it will usually start working.

Even when I get it working, the image just isn't as bright as it used to be even with a new lamp that I bought from BenQ.

I'm turning it over to SquareTrade now as I did get an extended warranty for it. This is my second and last projector (first was a Sony VW-50 that I had issues with). I had to downgrade from a 110" projected display to a 70" LCD (Vizio) but the image is MUCH better and I won't have to buy a lamp every year.

Keep in mind that I used this projector for my main TV so it had everyday usage. It is awesome when it works but I've had enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars great picture, but it has a high pitched whistle sound that comes from it, February 2, 2013

I replaced my first one within a couple of days, the second one worked great for around 200 hours, now it has the same high pitches whistle sound (not too loud, but annoying as heck). No problem if watching a loud movie, but when watching quiet scenes or simply something without the volume turned up high, it makes it difficult to enjoy.
Picture is AWESOME.
End of the day, if they would let me return it, I would (of course the sound didn't start until after return period), being that this is the second unit with same problem, I doubt a replacement will matter.
I will keep it and watch it, but not recommend it.

This projector is hit or miss. The one I had went to red power and red lamp mode and did not work at all. I have a very uncomfortable feeling about the purchase. I know others have had similar stories and even one other reviewer on Amazon. Benq agreed to send me a new one and I am hoping for better results. No matter how good the 3d or picture, it all means nothing if this things does not hold up! Cautiously approach this purchase while making sure you have lots of warranty with Benq.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I have owned this BenQ W7000 projector for several months now. Right out of the box, I was impressed with the projector; and with some minor calibration the picture quality is really something to see. All I can say is that it's like being at the movies but in the comfort of your own home. The potential size of the image can easily dwarf even the largest HDTV sets. I wanted to wait to post a review until I made sure that I had a chance to explore everything the projector can do - I've used the machine for around 100 hours, and no problems so far.

Image Quality: There's not much that I can compare it to because this is the first projector I have owned. But I've got it projecting onto a 72" screen, and I think the results are fantastic. I primarily watch blu-ray movies, but this projector can also make for an awesome video gaming experience; I also screened a concert movie for my family recent, and they were so impressed by the quality of the image. If you find the image isn't quite optimal, you can always adjust the settings such as brightness and contrast until you find an image that is more suitable for your viewing conditions. It's important that if you are in the market for your first projector as I was, do some research -- you will want quality projection screen that has the proper reflective qualities and is the correct size for your viewing area.

3D: I have experienced 3D in many formats, including at the movie theater and 3D TV, and this projector does the job well. If you are looking for an affordable starter pair of 3D glasses, these work just fine with this projector: UltraClear HD DLP Link compatible 3D Glasses

The unit comes with a remote so that you can control the projector from anywhere in the room (very helpful if you're going to have it mounted on your ceiling!). One thing I have noticed is that the projector will automatically search for an incoming video source (HDMI, A/V, etc) until it finds one, which can be slightly annoying while waiting for your blu-ray to load... but once you specify a source via the buttons on the unit or the remote controller, it will stay on that source (even if you have no incoming video).

Overall, I am very happy with this projector because it has met (and often exceeded) nearly all of my expectations. I hesitate to give this five stars, simply because this was my first projector and I am not extremely knowledgable on the flaws/merits of this projector vs. other projectors -- but the BenQ W7000 has met all of my needs and I've had no issues with it. As always, I strongly suggest before making a final decision that you do as much research as possible - there are a lot of great reviews for this product here on Amazon as well as other sites, and the BenQ website is also a great resource for information.

The sale man from this company assured potential buyers this model sold on Amazon comes with the new firmware version 1.03. I bought one that manufactured in 11/2012 and it has FW version 1.0. Amazon sent me a replacement (the best customer service on Earth!) and guess what, same old version so I'm very sure the entire batch that Amazon is selling curretnly on their website will be this old version which has known problem with black looks like grey and mapping issue. So, BenQ, please stop promissing if you can keep it; my unit is going back to Amazon and it's time to take my business to other companies.

Saying this is a good projector doesn't tell you much if you've never experienced a home theater projector. I you're thinking of purchasing one, do some research as it's not as simple as just buying a TV. As far as pic quality goes, compared to a TV, they are very comparable except you can go about as large as you want with a projector. If you can swing it, it's worth the investment.

Those that have or have had a projector, I can't tell you much except to compare it to my ax200u. It is a definite step up. Although it is said that black level is not a strong quality for this projector, it is noticeably better than the ax200u. The step up from 720p to 1080p is also a big jump. Not as noticeable on DVD, but blu ray material is much better.

I have been using the projector now for several months. The first thing I watched on it was the 3D version of Hugo. I was blown away at just how good the 3D image looked. It was the general consensus of family members that this was true. However, when I first started watching the projector in 2D I noted some problems. The image lacked "pop" when compared with my Optoma HD80 and there were a lot of image enhancement artifacts, with certain material. I spent some time on the user blogs and located a professional's image calibration recommendations. (I had no luck using the Spears and Munsil HD disc that I usually use for calibration.) After inputing the expert's recommended settings in the User 1 mode, I was blown away how great the 2D picture looked. It might still lack a bit of the "pop" of my Optoma (probably due to the only-average contrast ratios noted by some reviewers) but overall with the proper calibration this is a great looking projector that looks exactly like film when running at 24 fps. The calibration that I used uses the Dynamic Black "on" which means the auto iris is on. I know some people have complained about the noise. I haven't had that experience. The iris is quiet on my unit (or maybe I'm deaf.) The projector's fan can be a bit noisy when the lamp is on high, however, with the aforementioned calibration, the lamp was set in eco mode. The fan noise drops to almost nothing in that mode.

The DLP link glasses, that don't come with the projector, are available from multiple vendors in battery only and rechargeable types at reasonable costs on Amazon. I have both battery only and rechargables. They work well although I find that it takes a couple of minutes of getting my eyes and brain synced with the glasses. After that, like I said, the 3D looks great on movies like Hugo and Avatar. The source does make a difference. 2D converted to 3D such as Harry Potter 7.1 don't look quite as compelling and so if you buy this projector, make sure you take your first look on some good source material. You will be amazed.

UPDATE: After 50h of operation my unit froze. After power cycling the unit it will run for a few minutes and then the picture will either freeze or become corrupted and freeze. Exchanging with the retailer, so we'll see how the next one does. Major pain.

This was my upgrade from an older 720p 1000 lumen Mitsubishi projector. This projector is way brighter, as expected from the specs. The picture out of the box is good with deep colors. I found the normal color temp to be too red and prefer the warm setting, which is still a bit red to my eyes so I will probably customize further. This is one of the strong points of the unit. Lots of image settings including ISF configuration (requires an easy to obtain password). The unit also allows for a good range of physical lens position adjustment. I was able to use my current ceiling mount with little adjustment. A common criticism for this unit is the black level, which has yet to bother me. I guess I'm more concerned about color reproduction and a bright image. Even with dynamic black off, I'm rarely distracted by a 'bright black'. The 3D seems to perform well, but this is my first 3D projector so I have little to compare against.

One complaint is that the unit does not include ceiling mount screws. The instructions call for a M6x8 screw which is impossible to find. I even went to a specialty screw store :P I ended up shimming with a washer. If the screw is unobtainable in a major city like Seattle then it should be included. I would also like a lens cap, the unit doesn't have one. Another annoyance, noted by other reviewers, is the noise when dynamic black level is enabled. Indeed, it's an obvious high pitched whine whenever the unit makes an adjustment, which for typical content can be every couple seconds. If this didn't exist then I'd give 5 stars. It's not enough to make me dislike the unit overall though. I just turn the feature off and it doesn't seem to have much impact to my eye. The other features are good enough to compensate for this price point.

4.0 out of 5 stars BenQ W7000 - What you should know, October 2, 2012

If you choose to buy from LCD Sales, please be alerted that the units are shipped to Latin America and then redistributed in Orlando, Fla. This negates the warranty. They are very prompt and accommodating but they leave that piece out of the small print. You might want to pay $50 more.
Then there's the 3D DLP Link shutter glasses. Good luck finding those. While BenQ is very accommodating and customer friendly, THEY don't even have the glasses. So - better secure those first.
The W7000 presents a beautiful sharp - clear and bright picture. You will need to do some color adjustment. There are some online reviews that give you suggested RGB settings and they really get the picture looking good. I can't comment on the 3D - still awaiting some glasses I found in Penn. For the price, it's an excellent performer - in 2D anyway. 3D looks bright but .......... we shall see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Buy, September 10, 2012

Shane "Gearbox" (Nebraska) - See all my reviews
This review is from: BenQ W7000 300-Inches 1080p Cinema Quality Home Projection System -Black (Electronics)
This is my first chance to jump into the projector world, and so far I am loving it. I'll start by comparing to a smaller LCD or Plasma. The brightness, color, and blacks do suffer a bit, but the picture is brilliant from corner to corner, and I believe that it looks more life like then an LCD. The brightness of the W7000 seems to be more than enough, and can be watched with a decent amount of light in the room. The menu and settings are easy to work with, and easy to navigate. 3D looks fantastic, and there is absolutely no cross talk or flickering. 2D looks brilliant, and bluray is just flat out amazing.

Pros and cons:
Pros:
1. 2D with a high def signal looks outstanding, *See edit below)however, I don't care much for the 1080i or 720p content. I haven't seen much on the Dish HD channels that even comes close to bluray, in fact, I've been a little disgusted with the picture quality.

2. 3D looks wonderful, plenty of brightness, and no issues what so ever. I did go with the True Depth 3d DLP link glasses.

3. Installation was very easy, and the lens shift is a true lifesaver. I don't think that I would ever buy a projector without it.

4. Menus are easy to work with, and calibration was simple enough.

5. Lag seems more than tolerable

Cons:
1. Auto Iris. I have noticed a very high pitched noise with the iris, it doesn't bug me much, and I end up tuning it out, but it is loud enough to hear over medium volumes.

2. Saved menu. When you unplug the projector for a decent amount of time, you will lose your config settings, so make sure that you write them down.

3. Menu adjustments. There are some items in the menu that have a significant change in appearance between two settings. I wish that there were more incremental steps in between some of the menu item settings.

4. 3d switching can be a little monotonous, a drop down or selection menu would have helped considerably.

Summery:
Overall I am very impressed. I was a little concerned going from the Plasma, LCD, DLP tech to a projector, but I couldn't be happier. a decent projector can put out an amazing picture, and you just can't replace the size and price advantage. For the price of this projector, you get features that would normally cost a lot more, and there aren't any significant draw backs. Sure the blacks aren't the greatest, but the picture is beautiful. I would highly recommend this projector, and for the price, I think it's as good as it gets.

EDIT: Doing some research into the picture quality issues, this could be a problem with the Dish Hopper and Joey set up. I'll investigate more and update later.

9/18/12 Edit: I have done a few things to test the clarity issue. I bought a power conditioner to alleviate the spikes from the fridge near by and coincidentally that also helped with some of the fuzz. I have also done some testing with the Hopper/Joey and have concluded that the issue is with them and not the projector. Some channels look fantastic, and some don't. I plan to switch the Hopper with the Joey, and I'm confident that will help. I have went ahead and upped my rating to 5 stars. The menu complaints and the high pitch iris aren't enough to deduct from this fantastic piece or hardware.

End Summary: I am still very happy with this machine, and hopefully will work through my issues with the Hopper/Joey set up here soon. I literally looked at every receiver before buying the Benq W7000, and I can say with confidence that for the money, this is as good as it gets. I know that the only worries are with the black levels, and while they aren't inky, they are still very good. If your looking for a mid-range projector with a few high end features and cheaper then the competition with a beautiful picture and top rated 3D then this one is for you.

Updated: 12/12/12
I have now put a ton of hours into this thing and I'm still loving it. There are however a few issues that have come up. First being focus. The machine seems to come out of focus at random times, not sure if it's due to the monster bass, or just gravity. Adjusting it is no issue, just a minor annoyance being that I usually require help due to my poor eyesight. The second is with the 3D. Sometimes I get a vertical line in the middle of the screen and both halfs look distinguishably different. The only fix I have found it to toggle brilliant color once. This seems random, and doesn't matter is BC starts on or off.

Other then that, I have been thoroughly enjoying this machine.
