Picture quality is good enough, but the product is useless without the remote. Common enough, these days, but the remote was run over in a parking lot since I use it for on-the-road displays. The replacement remote is not listed on epson.com, so I have an $800 boat anchor. This is a current product, and I expect replacement parts to be available.

Connections aplenty!

The very first thing I noticed when receiving this Epson projector is the wide range of connectivity options it offers. HDMI, VGA, component video (Mini D-Sub, Composite), USB (either plug the projector into your system via USB, or plug a USB stick directly in), and Wireless (via iProjector app for iOS and Android, and network). The way I see it, more connectivity options the better -- in the event one method doesn't work, theres a backup. In the event you need to let someone use the projector, theres a good chance they can connect via one of the options.

Theres a lot to like about this projector but its not perfect.

### Connectivity

## HDMI, VGA -- These two connection types are fairly straightforward. Connect and the content/computer is immediately displayed.

## USB -- Plug the USB cable from the projector straight into your computer -- it installs the proper drivers into your system, and within a minute you're up and running, passing through both video and audio -- a bit more laggy than HDMI but it works!

## iProjector App -- I installed this on my Droid 4 android smartphone running ICS (obtainable from Google Play store for free), as well as a iPhone 4S (obtainable from iTunes app store for free). I set up the projector in ad-hoc mode, giving it its own SSID. The instructions were a bit lacking. Realized that the passkey needed to conform to a certain format. Both phones were able to detect the projector, but only the Droid 4 managed to connect.

I had high hopes for the iProjector App. It works well for the file formats it supports. Its not listed here but can be found on Epson's website. The formats are as follows: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Keynote, PDF, JPG, TIFF, PNG. Android currently only supports PDF, JPG, TIFF, PNG. What you may notice is the lack of support for videos. The app also does not support any animated graphics or audio. This would be great for basic presentations but you can forget about any multimedia. 3 of 5 stars.

## Network mode -- Besides using the iProjector App, you can also pair the projector with Epson's EasyMP Projection program. The program is currently compatible with Windows from 98 to Windows 7 (doesn't mention 8 at this time), as well as Mac OS X 10.3-10.8.

Following the basic instructions provided, I chose the advanced settings to set it up with my existing network (you can also use basic to set up ad-hoc mode). I input my wireless network settings (SSID, security settings, passphrase) into the projector. After installing the EasyMP software onto my computer, switched the projector's source to LAN, the projector appeared in the EasyMP application immediately.

The EasyMP software makes it easy to use the projector without having to deal with the wires. I would consider the performance acceptable, but a bit laggy. This could partly due to my older wireless 802.11g network.. The EasyMP doesn't have any file restrictions as the iProjection app does -- its just as if you plugged in directly. The application also allows you to adjust some projector settings including shutting it off. 4 of 5 stars.

### PERFORMANCE

In the few months I've owned this projector, I've already used it at 3 events. I've paired it with giant on stage projection screens as well as the Epson Duet 80-Inch Dual Aspect Ratio Projection Screen, Portable 4:3 and 16:9 Aspect Ratio Screen (ELPSC80). The projector can't be beat with the plethora of connectivity options. It is a short throw projector -- placing it 5' away, you can project an image of over 100". It also has 2600 lumens of brightness, which is still capable of displaying a vibrant image even in a lighted room (they have a 3000 lumens version of this projector -- Epson PowerLite 1771W Widescreen Business Projector (WXGA Resolution 1280x800) (V11H477020) or Epson PowerLite 1776W Widescreen Business Projector (WXGA Resolution 1280x800) (V11H476020)).

To sum it up, if you need a portable projector, especially for presentations on the go, or a small conference room, this Epson PowerLite 1761W is hard to beat. Its far from perfect, but it is one of the most versatile on the market.

I do a lot of slide show presentations, and I wanted a high quality projector that was lighter and more portable than my previous one that weighed in at about 8 pounds. Most smaller projectors I looked at had too few lumens to meet my needs. This little unit appears to be perfect so far. I haven't had an opportunity to use it a lot yet, but so far I'm very pleased. It is bright enough that the room doesn't have to be totally darkened in order to get a good, high quality picture on the screen. It also has a lot of flexibility with the variety of ports available for connections, and it can be used wirelessly if desired. For the price, this is a great projector.

When I ordered this item, I expected the wireless USB key to be included as it was listed in the product details.
Following are the details.

1) 3x Brighter Colors, and reliable performance — 3LCD, 3-chip technology
2) One measurement of brightness is not enough — look for both high color brightness and high white brightness. The PowerLite 1761W has:
3) Color Brightness: 2600 lumens (color light output)
4) White Brightness: 2600 lumens (white light output)
5) Slim, sleek design; 3.7 lb
6) WXGA resolution (HD 720p)
7) USB Plug ‘n Play instant setup
8) HDMI input
9) Wireless key included
10) EPSON iProjection App ready
11) PC-free presentations
12) Auto (vertical) keystone
13) Long-life lamp — up to 5000 hrs

The LAN wireless module was included, but detail number 9, the USB key for Quick Connect was not.
To have fewer connecting cables was one of the pluses when I purchased this unit.
I am disappointed.

The 1761W is amazing. So small, lightweight, bright and sharp. I could not believe for this amount of money that I could purchase this Epson Projector. The 2600 lumens that it has compared to my old NEC 1000 lumens that cost over twice as much 8 or 9 years ago astonishes me. Love being able to plug the projector HDMI into my Imac. I can't believe Epson can get all that light out of that small lense. I have not had time to work with the wireless or even install the software but I am sure that like everything else Epson does, it will be easy. The instant off and econmode are also nice features. An audio out jack would have been nice but not necessary!

It is so small that moving back and forth from home to my photo studio is simple. Cord, remote, and projector it the travel bag is hardly bigger that a large book!

I ordered it on Thursday and with Amazon Prime it cost only $3.00 to get it next day, WOW!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I'm not a businessman, or a media professional, nor am I required to give presentations. I wanted a projector because I wanted to watch movies and play games on a screen even bigger than my 50" HDTV. I was pleasantly surprised by the Epson 1761W.

Set-up was easy, even for a first-timer (but experienced gadget guy) like me. Connections are easy, and the projector doesn't require a lot of calibration or menu tweaking to get a great image. Even projecting onto a white wall instead of a proper screen, I get a great HD image.

I won't hold it against Epson in this review, but I should note that the projector is terrible for audio. You will need to output audio to an external receiver or speaker setup in order to hear anything from your source. I understand, however, that projectors are treated like computer monitors in this regard-- Speakers are not the focus or point of such a device. Still, I'd have liked more connections to pass the audio through from HDMI. As it stands, I have to go from my source to a reciever, and then out from the receiver to the projector.

I was happy to see that Epson included a carrying bag with the projector. It's a nice addition, and it shows that they care what happens after the purchase. Instead of gouging customers another fifty bucks for a cheap bag, like with most hardware, they include it, and I appreciate it.

The negatives of using a projector for movie night are the fan noise, which is not bad when you position the projector away from the seating area, and the need for darkness. You won't be watching movies in the daytime in a room with windows, unless you block the light completely. The need for a screen is a minor concern. Yes, a screen makes it look better, but white walls work well, and the blackout cloth needed to make your own screen is readily available in any fabric store.

Final verdict: Excellent for entertainment purposes. Highly recommended. Five stars!

WOW!!! Easy to set up! Plug and play. The clarity is amazing! I was able to adjust the frame with a button. The remote has AV mute to blank the screen during discussions. I haven't used the other connectors but I am so excited I can't wait to try all the features. In one word: AWESOME!!!!! I am not a techie and I am hooked to my Epson 1761w.

I've been very pleased with this projector. Small, compact and very quick setup. My typical use is broadcasting a powerpoint wirelessly, so the wireless connection (via Ad Hoc network) is perfect, and has never glitched, even carrying the broadcasting laptop several hundred feet away. The wireless won't work well for video-intensive presentations, but works great for more static presentations. Our setup typically requires quite a strong keystone correction, which is more than aptly covered even with this small of a projector. The case is a little flimsy, and I picked up a "15 laptop case for $20 that was sturdier. You can purchase the $99 wireless key adapter, but you don't need it, at least with a Mac, it's a piece of cake to connect it. However, it needs to take over your wifi to connect to the projector, so keep in mind, if you need internet, you'll need to have the laptop plugged in via ethernet.

Brightness is great, clarity and color even in a well-lit room. Overall, very pleased.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bright, easy to use projector with multiple connection options including wireless, December 29, 2012

This review is from: Epson PowerLite 1761W Projector (Ultraportable WXGA 720p Widescreen 3LCD, 2600 lumens color brightness, 2600 lumens white brightness, HDMI, wireless, app compatible, rapid setup) (Office Product)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The Epson PowerLite 1761W Projector is a lightweight, thin, easy to use projector with multiple projection options including connecting to a computer wirelessly. The projector is easy to set up and includes a remote control for convenience. I found the image to be sharp and bright. The internal loud speaker is a nice touch. Included with the projector is a travel bag for the projector, a remote control complete with batteries, a wireless adapter for the projector and a CD which includes the Epson network software.

Wired Connections

The computer offers connections to your computer via a VGA cable, a USB cable or a HDMI cable. You can use multiple connections at the same time and toggle between them. You can also use the split screen mode to show two images side by side, one from each connection. I connected the projector to several different laptops including a netbook and a 7 year old laptop without problem. However, I only connected to Windows computers and so I can not comment on the ease of connecting Apple computers.

Using the VGA or HDMI cable is the most straightforward and reliable means of connecting a computer to the projector since no software needs to be installed on the computer and it takes less than a minute (usually). However, the computer must be set to display on an external display which can be tricky to figure out sometimes.

Alternatively, connecting the computer via the USB cable takes more time and is more invasive since software is installed on your computer, but the USB connection offers the most features. With both the computer and the projector turned on, the USB cable is connected. Windows recognizes the projector and goes through the usual process of installing the hardware. A window appears (the first time only) from the Epson USB Display setup wizard which will install software installed on your computer after you agree to the terms and conditions. Once the software is installed, the image on the computer screen will be projected. The use of the USB connection is nice because you don't have to toggle between your computers display and the projector which can be troublesome in some cases. The computers screen is shown by both the computer and the projector. Furthermore, the use of the USB connection allows you to use the Epson remote control (included with the projector) to advance your presentation. Audio from your computer is played through the loudspeaker in the projector, not your computer. There is an audio jack in the back of the projector if you want to then connect it to a better loudspeaker. This is the default configuration with the Epson USB software, but it can be changed under the settings for the software.

Another option is to plug a USB drive directly into the back of the computer. Inserting a USB stick will bring up a menu showing the files on the drive which can be displayed on the computer and folders from the drive. PDF files and JPEG images can be shown, but disappointingly, PowerPoint presentations can not. So, to use the projector for presentations without a computer you would need to save your PowerPoint presentations as PDF files. The lack of support for PowerPoint negates the practicality of being able to plug a USB drive into the projector, in my opinion. However, it is a feature that allows you to show slide shows of your photos easily which is nice.

There is an audio port so that you can run a cable between the projector and a loudspeaker to use the loudspeaker instead of the projectors internal speaker.

Lastly, there is a RCA video port.

Display Settings

The height of the projector is adjusted by pressing a button on the underside and adjusting a foot that extends down from the front of the projector. At some angles, the image could appear as a trapezoid rather than a rectangle, but there is an auto keystone function that will adjust the image so that it appears to be a rectangle. If he image is not automatically adjusted enough, the problem is easily fixed using the keystone controls on top of the projector. You can adjust both the vertical and horizontal keystone. The focus and image size controlled by rings above the lens or using the remote control.

The controls on the top of the projector include a help button that will bring up a list of common questions. A menu button lets you adjust the controls for the projector such locking the control panel and presents information for the projector such as the number of hours it has been used.

The remove is surprisingly big, but lightweight. There a lot of controls on the remote including those to change the zoom, advance pages, control the volume and control the source. If your computer is connected to the projector via the USB connection, you can advance PowerPoint presentations using the remote which is a very nice feature. There is also a button which allows you to split the screen between two sources. So if you had a laptop connected to the USB port and another connected to the HDMI port, you could project both side by side. The remote has a pointer option, but this is controlled by the arrow keys so although it works, it isn't as good as using the mouse on your computer or a laser pointer. However, it is a nice touch.

Operation

The projector gets very hot when it is in use. There is a fan to cool the projector which is noticeably loud, but it is certainly not the loudest projector fan that I have ever heard. However, switching to the Eco mode will reduce the fan noise at the expense of a dimmer image.

Wireless Connections

Setting up the wireless connection is a bit time cumbersome and takes about 20 minutes. First you have to add the wireless USB drive (supplied with the projector) to the projector by unscrewing a cover, inserting the USB drive and then screwing the cover shut. Next you have to follow a series of steps using the projectors menus to get it ready for the wireless connection. Lastly, you must install the network software that is on an included CD or downloaded from the Epson website. You have to choose a virtual display (no explanation is given) and then restart your computer. Once the computer was reset and the Epson network software started, the wireless projector was easily found and once the security settings were set, the screen of the computer was being wirelessly projected.

I can see the wireless connection being very convenient since the computer is no longer tethered to the computer and so the person controlling the presentation doesn't need to sit near the projector nor are long cords required. The only feature that would have been better would be if the projector itself could connect to a wireless network to connect to the internet directly via a web browser.

Summary

Overall, an outstanding projector offering lightweight portability and multiple options for connections including wireless connections. The image is bright and sharp. The remote control is a nice touch and allows you to advance your presentations or to toggle through images. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Epson PowerLite 1761W Projector.
